The second kata Heian became trained initially as the first one. The connection with Kanku Dai is evident in the first half of the kata, seeming that Heian Nidan reproduces it almost exactly.

There is a great use of techniques of open hand (Shuto, Nukite), defenses of invested side and kicks that it distinguishes it of other kata Heian. This kata is usually considered more difficult for the practitioners than Heian Shodan. It is not known with certainty if it is for that reason that Shihan Funakoshi changed the order of these two Katas.

Heian Nidan can be simple and easy of understanding in its basic content, but inside him they can be some maneuvers and techniques very effective. The beginning movements are attacks to the antagonist's elbows. The technique of Nukite shows the simultaneous use of to block and to attack. The kata also includes techniques of defenses invested in its second half. Some instructors interpret these techniques as levers carried out against the arm that is attacking. The four final techniques are examples of to defend attacking. The defense below is interpreted sometimes as blow to the groin of the attackers while underhanded work of feet is used to avoid the attacker's technique.

Heian Nidan could be considered the kata of Water of the five elements of Musashi. Flowing and quickly, Heian Nidan gives emphasis to quick execution and the relaxed movement.
